Chimpanzee Trekking in Queen Elizabeth national park takes place in mainly two areas of Kyambura gorge and Kalinzu forest both part of the park. A popular activity in Uganda and there are different sites where this activity can be done.

Kyambura gorge is a tropical forest is 100 meters underground and the Gorge is about 1 km long. It is an extension of the Kyambura Game reserve which is part of Queen Elizabeth National Park. Kyambura gorge is characterized by dense tropical rain forest that are home to a large number of birds, primates and mammals like elephants and hippopotamus. Therefore visiting Kyambura is not only for trekking chimpanzees but only exploring the highlights of the park.

Kalinzu forest is another forgotten part of Queen Elizabeth National park for Chimpanzee trekking in the natural habits. It covers an area of about 149 Sq Km and is a home to butterflies, primates and birds among others. Chimpanzee trekking is done in the morning at $ 50 per person for foreign nonresidents.

There are over 290 chimpanzees in Kalinzu forest even though some of them are not habituated for trekking. However, trekking in Kalinzu is not as popular as trekking in Kibale forest National Park which is a home to various primates’ more than just chimpanzees.

Best time for Chimpanzee Trekking in Queen Elizabeth National Park

Dry season is the best time to visit both Kyambura gorge and Kalinzu forest because of the visibility in the forests and the dry grounds for easy walking and hiking. The best time is in the months of June to September then December to February. This is when there are less or no rains in the forests.

On the other hand wet season like March to May, October to December you can also track chimpanzees though the grounds in the forests are slippery. The challenging terrain can also be part of the experience. Therefore, anytime are an adventure time in Uganda and the best destination for primates trekking in East Africa.

Guided nature walk; Apart from Chimpanzee trekking, there is guided walk in the forest and you can sight other animals.

Bird Watching in Kalinzu forest; there is birding in Kalinzu especially in the morning hours or afternoon hours. There are different bird species in Kalinzu forest such as Verreaux Eagle, Barn Swallow, Purple Headed Starling, Red Chested Sunbird, Black billed Weaver, and African Emerald Cuckoo among other species.
